The Modern Meaning of Eloping
Eloping today is like hitting the "Love Reset" button! Imagine this: You and your partner, breaking free from the wedding rulebook, swapping the big box production for an intimate, you-focused celebration. It's choosing your own adventure, from a cozy cabin overlooking a lake to a hidden forest glade where your love takes the spotlight. Time to shine.
Eloping is all about crafting a day that screams "us" in the most joyfully rebellious way. So, if you're up for a wedding day that feels like one epic, secret handshake between you two, welcome to the elopement party!
Where to Elope?
Time to explore some dreamy locations that will have you saying, "I do," where you’ll feel like you’re in a movie, and well you are.
1. Mountain Marvel
For those craving a backdrop that screams epic peak romance, the mountains are your go-to. This one is my favorite type as an adventure elopement photographer. Whether it's the Rockies, the Alps, or even a cozy cabin in the Smokies, there's something enchanting about exchanging vows surrounded by towering snow capped peaks and crisp mountain air. Bonus: The photos will be nothing short of breathtaking!
2. Beach Bliss
Sand between your toes, waves serenading your love story—beach elopements are a dream. Picture golden sunsets, the sound of crashing blissful waves, and the freedom to say your vows with the ocean as your witness. Say hello to costal charm as the birds sing your wedding song in the backdrop. The elopement I photographed in Hawaii had me feeling one with the islands and ocean.
3. Urban Escape
If city vibes are more your jam, why not elope in the heart of a bustling metropolis? Rooftop views, city skylines, and the energy of the streets below—urban elopements offer a chic and modern twist to the classic love story.
4. Woodsy Wonderland
For the nature enthusiasts, a forest elopement is the way to go. Whether it's a redwood forest, a quaint woodland, or a national park, the enchanting embrace of the trees sets the stage for an intimate, fairytale-like ceremony. Can you imagine saying your vows under some of the tallest trees in the world. These are the kinds of moments you’ll never forget.
5. Desert Delight
Craving something a bit more unconventional? Head to the desert! The vast landscapes, stunning rock formations, and the warm glow of the sun create a surreal setting for an elopement that's as unique as your love story.
6. Countryside Charm
Escape to the countryside for a serene and picturesque elopement. Rolling hills, rustic barns, and open fields offer a tranquil backdrop for a celebration that feels like a page out of a storybook. I recently photographed one of these and they had an intimate wedding on a bridge with mountains surrounding them. It was so nice.
Remember, the perfect "where" is wherever your hearts feel at home. Whether you're drawn to the grandeur of nature or the hustle of the city, the world is your elopement oyster. So, where will your love story unfold?
When to Say "I Do"
It’s all about timing—because when you decide to say "I do" is as important as the "I do" itself! So, grab your calendars, and let's find that sweet spot for your elopement adventure.
Seasonal
Are you a fan of blooming flowers, warm breezes, and all things vibrant? Spring and summer might be your elopement soulmates. Picture exchanging vows under a canopy of cherry blossoms or dancing in a field of wildflowers. It's like stepping into a romance movie, but you're the stars!
On the flip side, if you're into cozy vibes, fall's your scene. The crisp air, the changing leaves, and the chance to wrap up in a stylish jacket—all ingredients for a fall elopement that's both magical and snug.
Winter Wonderland
Dreaming of a snowy escape or a holiday elopement? Winter is your ticket to a wonderland wedding. Picture a blanket of snow, cozy fireside moments, and perhaps a touch of frosty magic. Plus, winter elopements often come with a built-in excuse for cool winter accessories—beanies, scarves, and maybe even some snow boots!
I’ve been snowboarding since I was 10, so if you wanted to ever hit some epic powder trails I can be your co-pilot on that day while capturing your moments thru my camera.
As an elopement photographer, I love crafting in all the different seasons of the year as it gives me a different backdrop to be creative every few months. One month I’m taking pics of a couple as the autumn leaves fall around them with changing colors reflecting in the lake behind them then the next it’s like they’ve gone into a winter snow capped palace!
Weekdays
Here's a pro-tip: Weekdays often mean fewer crowds and more flexibility when it comes to securing your dream location. So, if you're eyeing that popular spot or dreaming of an intimate weekday ceremony, go for it! You'll thank yourself when you're enjoying a serene, crowd-free elopement. But, even if you can only do weekends, I can make anything work and still be an amazing time.
Anniversaries
Choosing a date that holds sentimental value can add an extra layer of magic to your elopement. Whether it's the anniversary of when you first met or the day you got engaged, tying the knot on a meaningful date makes your love story even more special.
Remember, the best time to elope is whenever feels right for you. Whether it's a spontaneous decision or a carefully planned affair, the key is to savor the moment and make it uniquely yours. So, when will your "I do" become a part of your love story? Time to pick the perfect moment for your elopement adventure!
Hiring an Elopement Photographer
Connection is key. Schedule a phone call or a virtual meet-up with potential photographers. Share your story, discuss your vision, and see if there's a natural rapport. The more comfortable you feel with your photographer, the more authentic and intimate your captured moments will be.
As you move forward, discuss the nitty-gritty details. What's included in their packages? Are travel expenses covered? Dive into the specifics of their editing style and any additional services. Clarifying these details upfront ensures a smooth collaboration and aligns expectations.
Ultimately, trust your instincts. If a photographer feels like the missing piece to your elopement puzzle, they probably are. Let your intuition guide you to the storyteller who will beautifully capture the chapters of your love dayt.
Make sure their style is matches your vibe and what you love.
Are they a photographer only? Some elopement photographers only offer an all day photoshoot. That is NOT what I would want on my elopement and I’m sure you don’t also.
Myself, not only do a document your day as it naturally happens, but I’m also your adventure buddy and elopement guide. I will help you with the timelines, scouting locations, assisting with what permits you need and so much more.
Also, most couples want an adventure on their elopement and that’s ALL my life is about. For the past 13 years straight I’ve been traveling, hiking, surfing, free diving and trail running my way around this Earth. I’m at about 30 total countries now and you can find me in a new country or city every week of the year.
If you want someone who can not only be your story teller with amazing photos that you’l be able to look back on in amazement for the rest of your life, .but also a travel whiz who knows the in’s and out’s of getting to dreamy locations and is pretty much an Elopement Jedi, I’m your guy!

Seek accommodations that mirror the charm of your elopement vision. From cozy cabins nestled in the mountains to beachside bungalows, your lodging choice should enhance the romance of your getaway. Explore options, read reviews, and book a haven where you can unwind and revel in the joy of being together.
I’ve found the Airbnb’s with solid reviews are a way to find the most unique and amazing looking places to stay out of anywhere else online. I’ve been using it myself and have over 50 reviews just as a guest from all over the world. So if you need some helping in choosing the right place that you can trust I can help out with that for you. There are really some jaw dropping places to stay on there that you’ll never find on a hotel website.
On your elopement day you’d probably love to feel more at “home” then a hotel.
Planning Activities
Infuse your elopement with unforgettable moments by planning activities that resonate with your love story. Whether it's a sunrise hike, a private boat excursion, or a candlelit dinner under the stars, curate experiences that reflect your unique connection. Research local attractions, seek adventure, and let each moment become a cherished chapter in your elopement tale.

Booking in Advance
Once you've crafted the perfect itinerary, don't forget to secure your reservations in advance. Whether it's reserving your preferred mode of transportation, locking in accommodations, or booking activities, proactive planning ensures a stress-free elopement day. But also if you’re like me, I’ve planned literally 100’s of trips 1 week out and just go with the flow. Everything doesn’t have to be exact, but if you have a dream cabin you’ve had your eye on, it’s best to scoop that up soon as you can.
What to Wear
Embrace Your Style
When thinking about how to elope, don’t brush aside what you’ll wear on that day. One of the beautiful aspects of eloping is the freedom to express your unique style. Whether you fancy a bohemian dress, a chic jumpsuit, or a dapper suit, let your personality shine through. Consider the climate of your chosen location, and select fabrics and styles that not only make you look stunning but also keep you comfortable.
Harmony with the Setting
Your attire might want to harmonize with the backdrop of your elopement destination. If you're saying your vows in a lush forest, earthy tones and flowing fabrics can complement the natural surroundings. For a beach elopement, lightweight and breathable fabrics may be the perfect choice. Aligning your attire with the setting creates a picturesque tableau that enhances the magic of the moment. But, if you wanted to wear a neon pink dress and yellow suit in the forest, have at it. No rules rule and I love going agasint the norm!
Comfort is Key
Remember, your elopement is a celebration of love and adventure. Ensure your chosen attire allows you to move freely and be present in the moment. Comfortable shoes are a must if you're exploring nature or dancing under the stars. Prioritize practicality without compromising on style. If you’re going on a hike, opt for hiking boots then change into dress shoes at the top, or heck, just keep the hiking boots on with the dress or suit. I think it’s such a cool vibe and I love them in the pics I take for people.
Personal Touches
Infuse your ensemble with personal touches that make it uniquely yours. Perhaps it's a piece of heirloom jewelry, a flower crown crafted from local blooms, or accessories that hold sentimental value. These details add layers of meaning to your attire, making it a tangible representation of your journey together.
Photogenic Fabrics
Keep in mind that certain fabrics photograph exceptionally well. Flowing fabrics like chiffon and silk can create stunning visuals in the breeze, while textured materials add depth to your photographs. Consider how your attire will interact with the elements and the camera, ensuring every snapshot tells the story of your love.
Remember there are NO rules to this day, this are just some tips, you can exchange give, wear and do whatever you want without judgement.
Question and Answers
We want to invite people to our elopement…
For sure! Your elopement is a personal celebration, and you can invite people to join in if that's what you desire. Whether it's a few close friends or family members, or a more extended guest list, the choice is entirely yours. As an elopement photographer I find the best number caps around 10-20. The more people you have it can be challenging to get everyone on a trek, on time and more opinions, expenses and condition starts to come into play with a lot of people. Communication is key – share your plans with those you'd like to include and make it a memorable day surrounded by the people who matter most to you.
You do not have to invite anyone else, this is your your day, it’s ok to be selfish. I have seen people also do a private elopement on one day then the day after invite their friends and family for another ceremony. Yes to no rules! I have a multi day elopement package for situations like this. Just hit me up and let’s plan exactly what your vision is.

The permits to get married in state park and a marriage license is something you need to research, as well there are different rules if you are going to elope in another country. I am here to help you research and plan all of this with you.
How Much will our Elopement Cost?
The cost of eloping varies widely and depends on your choices. Eloping can be budget-friendly, with lower expenses on venue, catering, and a smaller guest list. However, it can also involve travel costs, accommodations, and unique experiences that align with your vision. The beauty of eloping is its flexibility – you can tailor it to fit your budget while creating a meaningful and unforgettable experience. Whether it's a simple courthouse ceremony or an exotic destination elopement, the financial aspect is adaptable to your preferences and priorities.
This is one of the THE MOST important days of your life. You are paying for the experience and memories. Saving a little of bit of money to not have the experience you really want is something that can stay in your mind for years and leave regret.

What actually happens during an elopement ceremony?
An elopement ceremony is a deeply personal and intimate celebration of love between a couple. Typically, it involves the exchange of heartfelt vows where partners express their commitment to each other. There may be a ring exchange, symbolizing the bond they share. Led by an officiant or celebrant, the ceremony can take place in a location that holds special meaning for the couple. With a focus on intimacy, elopements often feature only a handful of close friends or family, if any. The ceremony can include unique elements, personal touches, and is documented through photography to preserve the cherished moments of this special day.
How can I legally elope?
Legally eloping involves a few straightforward steps to ensure your union is recognized. Start by researching the marriage laws in the location you've chosen, as regulations vary. Obtain the necessary legal documents, which often include a marriage license. Some places may require witnesses, so check the local requirements. Schedule a date that allows for processing time, and choose an officiant authorized to solemnize marriages. Once the ceremony is complete, ensure all necessary paperwork is signed and filed according to local regulations. Taking these practical steps ensures your elopement is not only a beautiful moment but also a legally recognized union. You can also choose to do this in your home county before or after you have your elopement, making it much easier on you.
What if I need a wedding officiant for our elopement?
Whether or not you need a wedding officiant for your elopement is entirely up to you. Some couples choose to have a friend or family member officiate, adding a personal touch to the ceremony, (they can easily register for the state online). Others opt for a professional officiant to guide the proceedings and ensure legalities are met. If you prefer a more intimate exchange of vows without an officiant, that's absolutely valid too. Plus if you’re doing an 8 hour hike it may be hard to find one to go with you. But, if you have a photographer like me I can sign off on your wedding legally (depending on the state) and do the hike with you and get the epic photos!
The beauty of elopements lies in their flexibility, allowing you to shape the ceremony to reflect your unique love story. Just ensure you understand the legal requirements of the location you've chosen, as some places may have specific officiant regulations.
What is self-solemnizating ceremony?
A self-solemnizing ceremony is a unique and empowering choice for couples looking to elope. In this special type of ceremony, the couple takes on the role of both participants and officiants, exchanging vows and making their commitment official without the need for an external officiant. This intimate and personal approach allows couples to guide the ceremony themselves, adding a profound and authentic touch to their union. Keep in mind that self-solemnization is not available everywhere, so it's essential to check the legal requirements in your chosen location. If the idea of crafting your ceremony and celebrating your love independently resonates with you, a self-solemnizing elopement could be the perfect fit.
Do we need witnesses for our elopement ceremony?
The legal regulations of the site you have chosen will determine if witnesses are required for your elopement ceremony. The marriage license may need to be signed by one or more witnesses in some locations, but not in others. Invite close friends or family members to be a part of this momentous occasion if witnesses are required. However, if you would rather have a private ceremony without witnesses, look into places where this is permitted. You may design your elopement to be a true representation of your special love story by being aware of the legal requirements as well as your personal preferences.
We legally aren’t getting married on our elopement day…
Choosing not to legally marry on your elopement day is entirely valid and increasingly common. Many couples opt for symbolic ceremonies to celebrate their love without the legal aspect. This decision might be due to personal beliefs, logistical reasons, or a desire for a stress-free celebration. If you decide on a symbolic ceremony, ensure you communicate openly about your intentions and expectations with your partner and any guests involved. While it won't result in a legal union, it can still be a profoundly meaningful and unforgettable celebration of your commitment to each other.
We want to get legally married on our elopement day…
If you're eager to make your elopement day legally binding, you're in for a journey. First, research the marriage laws in your chosen location, ensuring you understand the requirements for obtaining a marriage license and officiating the ceremony. Many couples choose to have a symbolic ceremony and then complete the legal formalities afterward, allowing for greater flexibility in choosing the location and atmosphere of their celebration. Whether you choose a single ceremony that blends the symbolic and legal aspects or separate the two, your elopement day can be a perfect fusion of romance and legality. Just be sure to plan accordingly and relish in the joy of officially uniting your lives on this special occasion.
We are already legally married on our elopement day…
If you're already legally married on your elopement day, it adds a beautiful layer of significance to your celebration. Perhaps you decided on a quiet courthouse ceremony or an intimate gathering before the elopement. This doesn't diminish the magic of your chosen day; it enhances it. Now, your elopement becomes a heartfelt reaffirmation of your commitment, a chance to celebrate your love surrounded by the beauty of your chosen location. It's a unique opportunity to share your joy with friends and family, knowing that the legal formalities have already been sealed. Embrace the love that brought you together and enjoy every moment of your special elopement day.
Is it difficult to get legally married in another country?
Getting legally married in another country can have its intricacies, but with thoughtful planning, it can be a rewarding experience. Start by researching the marriage laws and requirements of the specific country you have in mind. Some places may have residency requirements, documentation needs, or specific processes that differ from your home country. Engage in clear communication with local authorities, and consider seeking assistance from a wedding planner familiar with the destination's legal procedures. While there might be additional steps compared to a local wedding, many couples find the adventure and uniqueness of an international marriage ceremony well worth the effort. Understanding the process beforehand ensures a smoother journey toward your dream destination wedding.
Most couples choose to get legally married in their home country though, before or after the elopement.
What States Can Legally Elope in?
When it comes to legally eloping in the United States, the good news is that you have a wide array of options. Every state allows couples to obtain a marriage license, and with that, you can legally tie the knot. Whether you're drawn to the scenic beauty of Colorado, the coastal charm of California, or the historic allure of Massachusetts, you have the freedom to choose a state that resonates with your vision for the perfect elopement. Just ensure to familiarize yourself with the specific marriage requirements of the chosen state, and you'll be well on your way to legally celebrating your love in a place that holds special meaning for you.
